It is if one stays at an eco home, of integrated energy solutions utilizing Solar and Micro-Hydro Electric Power “off the grid” and integrated alternative fuels.
In the hills of the Marlborough Sounds is such a place. Utilizing satellite for internet so global connection is instant: there is of course Skype for instant conversation in any part of the world.
In Auckland several domestic wind power windmills direct circuited to the indoor power box so power is generated for domestic use off the grid. Excess is sold to the power company at the wholesale price. If required any power from the grid the power companies charge back at retail price. The logic being the power companies requiring profit to maintain their business and shareholders stake. One would think a slightly lower retail charge would be expected to encourage power saving measures.
Power companies are big business one questions the will away from the stock exchange and profit to really encourage investment in the green solution.
Huge wind farms in New Zealand? Small domestic windmills either nestled on a pylon in the garden with roses growing around it, create a small hut for kids to play in, or on the roof after all there are the satellite dishes, t.v. aerials would be certainly unobtrusive.
Power saving is easily accomplished in New Zealand, where there is ample water and wind.
New Zealand would have more water to use if wind was used more and encouraged to do so.
Logic and simple solutions would benefit all domestic and business users of power and give the power companies a good profit and not a profit that is excessive that wounds the country.

I wish all these were really implemented worldwide because they are very implementable.
Here in the Philippines, geothermal power is a big thing. It provides a good percentage of the power needs of the country.
And we discovered our geothermal capability when we junked all efforts for nuclear energy.
I’m proud to say that trashing the nuclear program has been the best thing that ever happened to the Philippines.
